Applies to the "Monitoring and Maintaining Servers" objective of Exam 70-646: Windows Server 2008, Server Administrator.

Q: A company's administrator needs to force a client machine to reset its automatic timer and check for assigned updates from the Windows Server Update Services server. Which command should the administrator use at the command prompt?

  1. Wuauclt /a /resetauthorization /detectnow
  2. Wuauclt /resetauthorization
  3. Gpupdate /force
  4. Gpupdate /wait:0

Answer and explanation is below.

Answer is A: The Wuauclt /a /resetauthorization /detectnow command can be used to reset the default timer of 1 hour on a client machine configured to receive assigned updates from a WSUS server. (Noteworthy: The Wuau in the command refers to Windows Update Automatic Update.)

Quick Tip: The command Wuauclt /a /resetauthorization /detectnow won’t yield any results at the command prompt, but the Windows\WindowsUpdate.log file can be checked after several minutes for any updates detected.
