I'm curious, Michael.... in light of the reported MS Project 2007 certifications, and their complimentary stance with the PMP, what shall become of the planning around MSF v4.0 and MOF certification exams? I tend to think that both MSF and MOF are still valuable and relevant frameworks, particularly for Microsoft Partner organisations.

Duly noted, Oliver (and a few weeks late; just read your comment today). I've made the change to the article to reflect the catch you made.

I fail to see what value any of these MS certifications would give to the Project or Program Manager's career track. There are so many PMO tools out there that exceed the capabilities of MS Project. We recently switched our $25B Govt program from MS Project to Primavera, after MS Project jeopardized meeting a major milestone due to it inability to handle such a large IMS.

I've three points to make:

1. PMPs are the kinds of folks that MANGAGE projects – if they’re installing software they need to step back to the MCSE level! PMPs will not want to (Should not) be certified to install software or hardware.

2. Many of the IT PMs I know moved up to Project Management to get off the certification tread mill – Reading a four foot stack of technical books each year on your personal time, just to keep your MCSE, isn’t the life any of us will lightly go back to.

3. Encouraging the professional to take the PMP before taking Microsoft’s certification is a high standard indeed - The PMP requires 2 years of actual project management experience (if you have a degree and more if you don’t.)

Not really, anonymous. The group wasn't created to make a profit and you'll never see the company's Q reports ever show the Learning Group to be one of shining stars for revenue (remember, the group isn't that big to begin with)... And new exams always follow new products... And they're always thinking of new ways to measure skills... Consider each new move that the group makes to be an improvement over the 'old way' of doing things. I can go on an on....

I guess the Microsoft certification group must have been given some tougher exam revenue targets given the now continuous stream of new exams.
