Microsoft Unveils PC Health Panacea
Windows OneCare service provides one-stop solution against malware and mucked-up computers.
Microsoft announced earlier this month it will be launching an internal test
of an all-in-one PC “health” service aimed at providing automated
protection, maintenance and performance tuning for Windows-based PCs.
The paid subscription-based service, called Windows OneCare, is a comprehensive
PC health solution that gives users a simplified way to deal with cyber threats
and other conditions that can affect a computer’s performance. The initial
“internal beta” will work with Windows XP SP2 and features real-time anti-virus and managed firewall
security, backup and restore capabilities and PC maintenance tools that can
periodically perform disk cleanup, hard-drive defragmentation and file repair.
Though most versions of the Windows operating system offer these tools, Windows
OneCare bundles all these various services in one place.
“Consumers need a simpler, more comprehensive solution to keep their
PCs ‘healthy’ and running well than what the traditional security
marketplace has been able to provide to date,” the company said in a statement.
A public beta of Windows OneCare is scheduled for later this year. Pricing
of the service is not yet available.
