Pop Quiz: Windows XP Legacy Application Support

Applies to the "Configure hardware and applications" objective of Exam 70-689.

Q: A company's application support team needs to provide a group of users with a solution so that they may continue to use a Windows XP application on their upgraded Windows 8 desktop machines.

The support team wants a solution that can be configured and managed locally on the desktop machines.

Which legacy application support technology should the team use?

  1. Hyper-V Replica
  2. App-V
  3. Med-V
  4. Client Hyper-V

Answers are D. Client Hyper-V is the same virtualization technology available in Windows Server. Windows 8 Pro includes the technology and does not require server-class hardware. A similar functionality found in Windows 7 was called Windows XP Mode.

Quick Tip: Client Hyper-V supports VMM P2V or SysInternals DisktoVHD tools. Check out the new MVA course to learn how to use these and many other SysInternals tools.

Bonus Question: What is the missing network element when using Wi-Fi Direct with Windows 8? (The answer, of course, will be revealed next time!)

Answer to bonus question from last week: The definition of sideloading Windows 8 apps is for those LOB (Line of Business) apps that would not normally be published to the public Windows Store but need to be installed on private corporate desktops—they are installed directly using PowerShell.
