Enterprise Security

Microsoft's security practices have been in the bull's-eye lately. While Redmond has become more responsive to security threats in recent years, its quick action across its broad and widespread product set has resulted in a dizzying array of fixes for IT to manage and keep track of. In this special report, ENT looks at the new generation of hotfix and service pack management tools designed to help enterprise IT keep on top of Microsoft's patches. In a related article, we take a look at the recent worm-related unpleasantness surrounding IIS, finding that many IT administrators fully intend to stick with Microsoft's Web server despite some advice to the contrary. The worms -- Nimda and Code Red variants -- exploited vulnerabilities that Microsoft had already patched, meaning users weren't keeping up with the patches. In the same article, we provide more context on the Netcraft survey results that showed users moving hastily away from IIS. The picture, of course, is more complex than that.
