In the age of public cloud, firewalls are no longer central, but they are every bit as critical as they ever were. Not long ago, the firewall sat in the datacenter, right next to the key applications and data that it needed to protect. Now, more data and line-of-business applications are spreading out into public clouds, such as Microsoft Azure and Amazon Web Services, and email and collaboration services are being handled in Office 365 or other Software-as-a-Service apps. Routing cloud traffic back through a centralized firewall is often impractical and counterproductive, even when it's possible. Protecting corporate assets and applications still requires firewalls, but many of the approaches are changing rapidly, with an increasing focus on next-generation firewalls in the cloud and web application firewalls.
In this editorial webcast, Redmond Editor Scott Bekker looks at how IT professionals are deploying, configuring, managing and paying for widely distributed firewalls to deal with the new challenges of blocking attackers in cloud-heavy environments.
