Windows Reclaims Top Spot in SAP Benchmark

Unisys Corp. this week leapfrogged IBM Corp. with a Unisys ES7000 32-processor server running Windows Datacenter Server to retake the top spot on an SAP application scalability benchmark.
Unisys spent the last year working its way up to the top spot on the SAP Standard Application Sales and Distribution (SD) benchmark, but IBM recently displaced the Unisys-Microsoft-Intel combination.
The latest Unisys system to take the top spot set the benchmark record at 26,000 concurrent users.
The benchmarked Unisys system was an ES7000 with 32 Intel Xeon 900 MHz processors and 12 GB of main memory and 128 MB of L3 cache. The system ran Windows Datacenter Limited Edition and SQL Server 2000 Enterprise Edition.
Microsoft formally released Windows Datacenter Limited Edition this week, although Microsoft and Unisys have been using the operating system, based on Windows .NET Datacenter Server beta code, in benchmark tests since September.
The ES7000 serves as the database back-end in a massive configuration for the SAP SD test. Unisys used 99 eight-processor machines in the test as well. The total cost of the system is not released when running the SAP benchmark.
