HP to Demonstrate IA-64 Products at Intel Developer Forum

Hewlett-Packard Co. will highlight its developments for Intel Corp.'s IA-64 hardware platform through a series of demonstrations and technical presentations this week at the Intel Developer Forum (IDF) in Palm Springs, Calif. Among the demonstrations will be Linux on Itanium Server and Workstation demonstrations as well as use of the IA-64 Linux kernel.

HP (www.hp.com) will showcase its IA-64 offerings by demonstrating applications from partners Synopsys and MSC.Software Corp. (www.mscsoftware.com) on HP's workstations and servers based on Intel's forthcoming Itanium IA-64 processor. HP's enterprise server demonstration will include Trillian Linux on IA-64 running the Synopsys (www.synopsys.com) EDA application. Synopsys software is used by electronics companies to verify system-on-chip and ASIC devices. HP Visualize workstations will be used to demonstrate MSC.Software's Marc software, which are 3-D mechanical analysis solutions for computer-aided engineering used by automotive and aerospace companies.

Enhancements to the IA-64 Linux kernel will be presented by HP Labs and VA Linux (www.valinux.com). Discussions will include the future direction of the Trillian project as well as the status of contributions made by Trillian (www.linuxia64.com) team members.

The forum will include a session in which the first public details of the IA-64 architecture for system software will be revealed. Jerry Huck, project manager of EPIC, the HP-Intel partnership that developed IA-64, and lead architect at HP Labs, and Rumi Zahir of Intel (www.intel.com) will host the session and provide the details. Additionally, information necessary to developing an OS on IA-64 will be discussed.

HP will deliver Itainium systems supporting HP-UX, NT-64, and Linux. IA-64-ready HP-UX 11 is shipping on HP's PA-RISC2-based HP 9000 V-Class, N-Class, and L-Class Enterprise Servers and HP's Visualize workstation family. -- Isaac Slepner
