Small Business Server 2003 Officially Launched

Newest Windows System Server software for small/medium business makes debut at Microsoft Worldwide Partner Conference.

Microsoft has officially released Windows Small Business Server 2003 three weeks after the company released the finished code to manufacturing. Microsoft introduced the finalized version at its Worldwide Partner Conference in New Orleans.

Windows Server Suite 2003 comes in two flavors:

  • Standard: Comes with Windows Server 2003, SharePoint Services and Exchange Server 2003, and Routing and Remote Access.
  • Premium: Replaces Routing and Remote Access with ISA Server 2000 for Internet security and adds SQL Server 2000 and Office FrontPage 2003.

Standard is US$599; Premium is $1,499. Client access licenses are $99 each.

Like its predecessor, SBS 2000, the newest version fits snugly in the SOHO market and has independent consultants among its strongest proponents.

"SBS 2003 gives a lot more to the MBAs than the MCSEs of the world," says Harry Brelsford, a consultant in the Pacific Northwest and the owner of NetHealthmon.com, a business that primarily focuses on SBS implementations. "Window SharePoint Services, with its collaborative and basic document management capabilities, will be an MBA's dream come true in terms of helping small businesses manage workflow, recast business operations and, as Microsoft says, 'do more with less'."

Microsoft expects to release an exam based on this release, 70-282, Designing, Deploying, and Managing a Network Solution for a Small- and Medium-Sized Business, in the last quarter of 2003. To read more about the exam, go to http://www.microsoft.com/traincert/exams/70-282.asp.
