Reports: SP1 Coming Soon

Reports on the Web indicate that Microsoft Corp. is close to releasing Service Pack 1 for Windows 2000. SP1 could be released to manufacturing as early as Monday.

The reports caution that the core service pack is an 83.3 MB download. The final version would be somewhat less weighty, though still in the 50-60 MB range.

According to the reports, SP1 corrects several setup bugs, access violation errors, memory leaks, stop errors and some security issues. Most of the more serious issues have already been resolved by periodic hot fixes, which are to be built into SP1.

The service pack also may contain a version of Outlook which fixes the security holes seen in the wake of the recent e-mail-borne worms. - Isaac Slepner
