Compaq and Veritas Sign Storage Management Agreement

Compaq Computer Corp. and Veritas Software Corp. today announced they have signed a storage management software agreement that provides a foundation and first step for joint development and marketing of storage solutions employing Veritas storage management software and Compaq's enterprise-class storage systems.

The companies will develop tools customers can use for continuous data availability, ease-of-use, and data protection for their enterprises.

Veritas Software has developed an API for disk array management that provides configuration and management of Windows NT disk volumes using Veritas Software's Logical Disk Manager while recognizing and exposing value-added and high availability features of underlying hardware-based array controlers. The API will also provide interoperability between all Veritas Software storage management products and Compaq disk arrays, enabling Compaq customers to take advantage of the continuous data accessibility, performance and manageability provided by Veritas.

Veritas recently announced its intent to acquire Seagate Software Network and Storage Management Group. This acquisition, if approved, could serve to strengthen the alliance between Compaq and the newly formed company. "Compaq and Seagate have enjoyed a close working relationship through our Storage Management Alliance," says Howard Elias, vice president and general manager of Compaq's enterprise-class storage systems.

The agreement leverages relationships both Compaq and Veritas already have with Microsoft Corp. Veritas has announced that Microsoft plans to embed selected storage management capabilities from the Veritas Software Foundation Suite into future versions of Windows 2000 Server.

Compaq currently offers a variety of storage solutions for the Windows 2000 platform and for Windows 2000 clustering environment. --Brian Ploskina, Assistant Editor
