HP Releases SQL Server Backup Results

After announcing the successful completion of backup tests with HP OpenView OmniBack II and Microsoft SQL Server 7.0, Hewlett-Packard Co. released OmniBack II support for Active Directory, the directory service component of the upcoming Windows 2000 operating system.

OmniBack II reportedly protects the Active Directory, Certificate and File Replication services for Windows 2000 environments. It also provide backup and restore of the Windows 2000 file system, including support for volume mount points, directory junctions and the encrypted file system. HP currently offers high-performance storage-management solutions for distributed Windows NT server and Windows NT server clustering environments.

Results of the backup tests, run by HP, show backup transactions of 622 GB/ph. HP says the results prove backing up and restoring large Microsoft SQL Server 7.0 databases can be accomplished with "minimal disruption to database productivity."

The OmniBack II implements all backup and restore features of Microsoft SQL Server 7.0, including full, differential, and parallel database backups, and backup of single databases on multiple devices. It also provides multiplatform support, centralized backup and media management, and Java-based notification, reporting and monitoring. -- Brian Ploskina, Assistant Editor
