Companies Partner to Support sendmail

Since the dawn of e-mail, sendmail has enjoyed a leading market share in the open source messaging industry. The company Sendmail Inc. was formed last year and has been cashing in on proprietary versions since December when it released Sendmail Pro and purchased Sendmail for NT from MetaInfo Inc.

Greg Olson, president and CEO of Sendmail, says open source is great for developers but that the Internet has more needs for standard packages, push-button controls, tech support, training and consulting. That's why Sendmail Inc. was started.

"Our approach is not to abandon the original open source community so we have two product lines," Olson says. "One is the open source for the developer community and we have also launched a set of commercial products for the mainstream market."

In order for Sendmail to move forward, it needed to provide standard access protocols, such as POP and IMAP. The Edmonton, Alberta-based MessagingDirect had this technology so now it is being incorporated into the sendmail platform.

Olson says NT is Sendmail's largest selling platform. "People love it because on NT, you can support 10,000 users on a single Intel-based platform," Olson explains. He points out, however, that you can't do that with Exchange. -- Brian Ploskina
