Dell Extends SAN Product Line, Adds Compaq Server Support

www.dell.com) today extended its line of Windows NT Storage Area Network (SAN) products. Dell also announced support for Compaq ProLiant servers within a Dell-based SAN.
Today's announcement is Dell's first attempt to support non-Dell branded hardware in its SAN solutions. Up to 10 -- 12 for dedicated SAN backup -- Compaq ProLiant or Dell PowerEdge servers, or a combination of the two, can be attached to as many as four Dell PowerVault 650F Fibre Channel storage systems and eight PowerVault 130T DLTtape library systems. The new capability provides up to 8.4 terabytes of fibre channel storage and up to 16.8 terabytes of backup storage, supporting data center applications such as servers managing large databases.
As support software for the new PowerVault SAN, Dell is introducing the Dell PowerVault SAN Configuration Tool and Dell PowerSuites for Backup and Restore Software. The configuration tool provides a graphical view that simplifies SAN configuration and provides a detailed report that can be used to order Dell PowerVault SAN solutions.
Additionally, Dell announced the availability today of several products and capabilities. These include the PowerVault 51F, a new fibre-channel switch that customers can have built to order; OpenManage PowerSuites, which simplifies the ordering and configuration of over-the-SAN backup solutions; the SAN Configuration Tool; two new QLA2200x fibre channel host bus adapters; clustering support for up to four 2-node Microsoft Cluster Servers connected to the SAN via a fibre-channel fabric; zoning support; and the ability to connect data centers with backup as far as 10 kilometers away, improving customers' disaster tolerance.
