EMC to Acquire Softworks

In a move to corner the market in storage management software, EMC Corp. has announced plans to acquire Softworks, Inc. Softworks (www.softworks.com) is a provider of enterprise data, storage, and performance management software, and its products will complement EMC's (www.emc.com) stable of storage management offerings.

EMC will offer to purchase all outstanding shares of Softworks stock, and the offer will commence no later than December 28. The acquisition has been approved by both companies' boards of directors, and is expected to be completed by the first quarter of 2000.

Mike Ruettgers, EMC President and CEO, said, "Softworks' products are key enablers for customers in both mainframe and open systems environments. We believe Softworks' knowledge and experience will accelerate EMC's time to market in several new and emerging areas of storage management software."

Softworks' products improve the management, performance, and integrity of critical corporate information across Windows NT, Unix, OS/390, and MVS platforms. Softworks is a member of the FibreAlliance (www.fibrealliance.com), an open industry consortium developing standards for managing storage area networks (SANs), and the EMC E-Infostructure Developers program. -- Isaac Slepner
