3Com Unveils Two Server NICs

3Com Corp. is working with Microsoft Corp. on a server-based network interface card with security and speed features optimized for Windows 2000. The EtherLink Server 10/100 PCI NIC with 3X Processor is expected to be available later this quarter. The card is designed for high-performance server applications that also require security such as e-commerce, banking, healthcare, and government work. The NIC offloads IPSec, TCP/IP checksum, and TCP segmentation from the host system to the NIC’s on-board processor and encryption chip. The NIC will also provide IPSec offloads for Windows 95/98. 3Com also announced immediate availability for the 3Com EtherLink Server 10/100 PCI NIC. Both cards feature 3Com’s DynamicAccess technology, which includes bi-directional load balancing to increase server bandwidth by sharing traffic among multiple NICs, fail-over across multiple NICs to create redundant connections from the server to the network, self-healing drivers, hot plug PCI, traffic prioritization, and multiple VLAN support. List price for the Windows 2000 card is $139 each or $1,251 for ten. The EtherLink Server 10/100 PCI NIC lists at $119 for one and $1071 for ten.
