Compaq Leads PC Market, Dell Closing In, Says IDC

Strong consumer demand in the Far East drove second-quarter 2000 year-on-year worldwide PC unit growth of 14.5 percent, according to preliminary estimates from IDC. Worldwide PC shipments rose to 30.1 million, representing a seasonally expected sequential decline of 2.1 percent.
IDC (www.idc.com) reported that worldwide growth far exceeded that of the United States in the second quarter. The U.S. market expanded 7.2 percent over the same quarter a year ago to a unit shipment total of 11.7 million.
Unit gains worldwide were solid for most major vendors. In the U.S., Dell Computer Corp. (www.dell.com) retained its top position over Compaq Computer Corp. (www.compaq.com) and increased its market share. In worldwide market share, the two OEM giants switched positions, with Dell behind Compaq but closing the gap. Compaq's unit shipments declined in the U.S. and grew only 6 percent worldwide.
Hewlett-Packard Co. (www.hp.com) continued to hold the number three spot in the U.S. market, boosted by its top position in U.S. retail desktops. The company posted 34 percent growth over the same quarter a year ago. IBM Corp. (www.ibm.com) appeared in the top five in the U.S. and took the number four spot worldwide. - Isaac Slepner
