Dell, Microsoft Partner on NAS Solutions

Network Attached Storage (NAS) has been touted an ideal
storage system for NT/2000 administrators since it scales quickly with a
minimum of fuss. Today
Microsoft Corp.
and
Dell Computer Corp. announced a
partnership to develop NAS products.
Dell says that it will base its future NAS devices on
Windows 2000, citing easy management and scalable architectures. The PowerVault
line will serve files using Windows 2000 as its base.
Neither Microsoft nor Dell announced clear plans for
releasing the devices.
NAS
devices often use either a proprietary operating system and filesystem, or
Linux and NFS (Network Filesystem) to manage the devices. For example NAS
leader Network Appliance Corp. has its own operating system and Cobalt, which
was recently purchased by Sun Microsystems Inc, uses a version of Linux to
handle fileserving duties. – Christopher McConnell
