Big Day for Small Business Server 2000

Microsoft unveiled Win2K and .NET revamped solution suite for 50-and-fewer-PCs businesses at The Big Day training seminar, a Microsoft-sponsored seminar for small business owners.

According to a press release issued by the company, Microsoft unveiled a revamped, Windows 2000- and .NET-ready Small Business Server 2000 at "The Big Day," a Microsoft-sponsored training seminar for small business owners, in Atlantic City, New Jersey. Besides being a Windows 2000- and .NET-based software suite, this version comes with double the user licenses -- up to 50 with this version -- than its predecessor.

SBS 2000 comes with:

  • Windows 2000 Server Standard Edition with Service Pack 1
  • Exchange 2000 Server Standard Edition
  • Microsoft Internet Security and Acceleration Server 2000 Standard Edition
  • SQL Server 2000 Standard Edition
  • Shared faxing service.
  • Shared modem service.
  • FrontPage 2000
  • Windows Terminal Services

Microsoft has also been touting stability in this version, due mainly to overall improvements in component integration and Windows 2000.

"One of the strongest reasons to consider SBS 2000 is because of its improvements in reliability," said Harry Brelsford, an SBS consultant who has worked with the beta version. "The first release of SBS had some bad mojo working on it."

SBS 2000 retails for $1,499 for a basic single server/5-client configuration to $3,656 for one server with 50 licenses. Pricing guide, details, and a downloadable evaluation kit are available at http://www.microsoft.com/sbserver/.
