Nortel, Microsoft Team on Offering for Service Providers

Microsoft Corp. and Nortel Networks struck a deal to offer a high-end package of hardware and software to service providers, the companies announced Tuesday at SUPERCOMM in Atlanta.

The companies call the package the Continuously Available Managed Services solution. It is targeted for service providers who want to connect distributed data centers for continuous availability of hosted software services.

The solution will be available in the fourth quarter, the companies said.

Microsoft provides Windows 2000 servers, .NET Enterprise Servers and Web services. Nortel's part of the deal involve its optical solutions, content networking solutions and intelligent IP solutions.

The specific .NET Enteprise Servers supported under the package are Exhcnage Server 2000, Commerce Server 2000, BizTalk Server 2000 and SQL Server 2000. Nortel's products include OPTera, Alteon and Passport.

The software runs on Compaq ProLiant servers and connects to EMC Corp. storage systems.
