Intel Speeding up Pentium 4

Intel Corp. will speed up its Pentium 4 processor line incrementally next month, a senior executive says.
Mike Splinter, Intel's executive vice president and director of worldwide sales and marketing, discussed plans for several of Intel's processor lines this week during a keynote at Technology Exchange Week in New York.
The refresh on the Pentium 4 brings the processor up slightly in speed to 1.8 GHz from the 1.7 GHz version on the market now. The company will also roll out a 1.6 GHz Pentium 4, a processor with a faster front-side bus than the older Pentiums.
Splinter also discussed the company's roadmap for its lower power Tualatin processor, which will be called the mobile Pentium III. Intel will debut the processor in the third quarter at speeds "in excess of 1 GHz." IBM this week unveiled servers that will come with 1.13 GHz Tualatin processors. Intel expects the processors to be used in mobile computers, ultra-dense servers and application servers.
On the 64-bit front, Splinter said 17 server and workstation vendors have announced Itanium-based systems so far. Intel has said it expects 25 manufactures to offer at least 35 Itanium models this year.
