Microsoft Unveils Word Processing & E-mail Package for Mac Clients

Microsoft Corp. announced a lower-cost word processor and e-mail package for Mac users on Thursday.

Word + Entourage 2001 Special Edition will be available Monday in English and Aug. 6 in French.

"We wanted to provide an opportunity for price-sensitive Mac users to take advantage" of Word and the new Entourage e-mail client, said Kevin Browne, general manager of Microsoft's Macintosh Business Unit. Microsoft introduced Entourage last year with the launch of Office 2001 for Mac, which became generally available in October.

Entourage replaces Outlook as the default Mac e-mail client. It is focused more on individual productivity than organizational productivity. Consequently it is less closely integrated with a server than Outlook and has fewer group features like group calendaring.

The special edition unveiled Thursday is a stripped-down version of the software available in Office 2001 for Mac. Features in Office 2001 not included in the special edition include menu and toolbar customization, scripting support, synchronization with Palm handhelds and business templates.

The special edition will cost $150 and will include an option for upgrade to the forthcoming Office 10 for Mac OS X for another $150.
