Microsoft Demos XQuery

Microsoft Corp. this week posted a demo to the Web of an XML querying language called XQuery that the company plans to embed in the .NET Framework and in many of its enterprise server products.
Microsoft is working within the World Wide Web Consortium (W3C) on the XQuery standard. The W3C released a second working draft specification for XQuery in June.
"This is going to change the way developers build systems and build applications," says Philip DesAutels, a Microsoft product manager for XML Web Services. "As data migrates to XML, there's this gap in the process of building applications. I have my data in XML. I need to process it."
Microsoft contends XQuery will be to XML data what the Structured Query Language (SQL) is to relational data.
Microsoft plans to build XQuery into the next generation of SQL Server as a native query, into the .NET Framework and into other .NET Enterprise Servers, DesAutels says.
The demo can be executed on the Web site. Users can also download the demo into Visual Studio .NET as a set of classes.
