OEMs Delivering XP Systems

Hewlett-Packard Co. and Dell Computer Corp. both have begun shipping business PCs with Windows XP installed.
HP made the announcement late last week that its business desktops running Windows XP Professional were available. Dell's Web site also allows customers to order business desktops with Windows XP installed.
Microsoft Corp. plans to formally launch Windows XP on Oct. 25, although the code has been in the hands of major OEMs for weeks.
HP noted that wide availability of its own systems with Windows XP installed won't occur until Oct. 25.
Many customers are questioning why they need to spend money on desktop upgrades in a weak economy, and HP made its case for the new PCs with the announcement last week.
HP touts the increased mobility of Windows XP laptop in a wireless or wired environment and through the remote desktop tools that allow users to access their data and applications from other networked PCs.
HP also highlights total cost of ownership benefits of Windows XP for IT managers, including tools for centralized administration and application compatibility.
