Stratus Gets Another Japanese Reseller

What's with all the Japanese resellers of the Stratus Technologies Inc. fault tolerant computers?

Hitachi Ltd. announced this week that it would resell Stratus ftServers, which run Windows 2000 at five-nines or six-nines reliability levels, in Asia. NEC and Toshiba already have agreements to sell Stratus systems or technology.

"It's a business culture factor," offers Ken Donoghue, director of public relations for Stratus. "It's a little bit of the Japanese mentality that it's better to be safe than sorry."

Stratus has done about 30 percent of its business thus far in Asia, with the most sales in Japan, China and Taiwan, Donoghue says.

Donoghue notes that an equally, if not more important reason, for all the Asian partnerships is a long-time Stratus executive in Asia with key contacts at the major computer manufacturing companies.

In the United States, NEC also resells Stratus servers and its own branded NEC servers with Stratus fault-tolerant technology inside.

No other U.S. OEM partnerships have been made public, although Compaq Computer Corp. is an investor in Stratus.
