Compaq Claims 2 Million Exchange 2000 Seats

Compaq Computer Corp.'s services arm says about a quarter of the Exchange seats it has deployed or managed since the Exchange 2000 launch a year and a half ago have been with the new version of the e-mail server.
Compaq on Tuesday trumpeted the milestone of having installed 2 million Exchange 2000 seats to date. That number comes out of a total of 8 million Exchange seats that Compaq Global Services had deployed or managed under contract since the September 2000 launch of Exchange 2000.
Earlier in the month, when Compaq Global Services unveiled utility-style Exchange solutions, the company's claims for Exchange 2000 deployments were about 200,000 seats lower at 1.8 million seats. That was about 12 percent of the 15 million total Exchange seats Compaq Global Services had deployed or had under contract.
Compaq claims to be the largest Exchange integrator in the industry. In any event, its 15 million seats make up a statistically significant portion of the 100 million plus Exchange seats Microsoft Corp. says it has sold. Microsoft consistently declines to break out or estimate the percentage of those seats running Exchange 2000 versus older versions of the e-mail server.
Exchange 2000 has had a relatively slow uptake in the market due to its dependence on the Windows 2000 Active Directory, which remains far from ubiquitous in large organizations. Organizations that do deploy both Exchange 2000 and Active Directory together have reported administrative productivity gains due to streamlined user account management and other synergies.
