BMC Updates SQL Server Tool

BMC Software showed a deepening commitment to Microsoft SQL Server on Monday by updating a SQL Server backup and recovery tool and extending two of its existing database management tools to support the Microsoft database.
The backup and recovery enhancements come in a new 3.0 version of SQL-BackTrack for Microsoft SQL Server. New features in the refresh of SQL-BackTrack include a logical extraction feature and named instance/cluster support.
The logical extraction feature gives DBAs the ability to recover individual objects from physical backup, creating an opportunity for low-impact recovery of vital files. Named instance/cluster support gives DBAs the option of backing up and recovering several named instances of SQL Server.
BMC has a history of targeting Oracle and DB2 databases with its tools. Two of its Oracle/DB2 tools that newly support SQL Server are SmartDBA Cockpit and DBXray.
SmartDBA Cockpit provides a Web browser interface for managing databases remotely. BMC positions it as a productivity and training tool DBXray is a diagnostic and visualization tool for detecting, diagnosing and fixing database problems.
