From the business wires this week: HTTP compression solutions that enable faster Web browsing, server and workstation management software, and patch management programs.

Port80 Software made available twin offerings this past week with two affordable HTTP compression solutions for Windows Web servers. httpZip 2.0 provides HTTP compression for all versions of Microsoft Internet Information Services (IIS). ZipEnable 2.0, however, focuses on fine management of the newest version of IIS—IIS 6.0—integrated in Microsoft Server 2003, and boasts several features, such as browser compatibility checking, not available in Microsoft’s native compression. httpZip 2.0 includes a free copy of ZipEnable 2.0 and is priced at $299.95 per physical server. For data center managers who need to address changing power needs comes the InfraStruXure 150kVA Power Distribution Unit (PDU). Sybase PowerDesigner 11 from Sybase, Inc. enables enterprises to better align business and IT goals through a combination of standard modeling techniques, including application modeling through Unified Modeling Language (UML), Business Process Modeling, and traditional database modeling. The enterprise modeling tool now supports the latest releases of RDBMS engines, Web services, XML and J2EE 1.4. Pricing starts at $995 per developer seat. http://www.sybase.com

Acronis, Inc. announced the launch of its eighth generation of systems and storage management solutions with Acronis True Image Enterprise Server 8.0 and Acronis True Image Corporate Workstation 8.0. With Enterprise Server’s centralized server storage management, IT managers can restore critical systems within minutes and implement change-management best practices for installing Windows programs, patches and upgrades. Corporate Workstation allows network managers to perform similar functions across all workstations in a network. Dell PowerEdge 1855

The Dell PowerEdge 1855 boasts 43% better density than 1U rack servers.

Dell lowered customers’ entry point for its blade servers with the new PowerEdge 1855. The dual-Intel Xeon EM64T blade server can hold up to 16GB of DDR2 memory and two hard drives. Ten PowerEdge 1855s can fit snug into a 7U chassis for $19,989. A single blade starts at $1,699. Dell also announced a joint development project with Microsoft, which will combine Dell’s OpenManage 4 server management software with Microsoft’s Systems Management Server 2003. The software patch and update deployment tool, called SMS 2003 Inventory Tool for Dell Updates, will be available in January. http://www.dell.com

Wise Solutions announced the release of its patch management solution Wise Package Studio 5.5. The new version provides: automated patch assessment, patch testing, Windows Installer 3.0 support, expanded transport support and enhanced Web application installations. http://www.wise.com
