Microsoft filed a development agreement this week with the city of Redmond, Wash., committing to expanding its corporate headquarters there.
The plan calls for Microsoft to spend more than $30 million in local transportation and infrastructure improvements and to add about 2 million square feet of new and renovated space to provide room for an additional 10,000 to 12,000 workers.
Occupancy of the next new building could come as soon as 2007.
Currently Microsoft has about 28,000 workers in the Puget Sound region out of some 58,000 employees worldwide. Microsoft expects to hire 6,000 to 7,000 people worldwide in the current fiscal year, with about 3,000 of those new employees in the Seattle area.
Microsoft moved its headquarters to Redmond in 1986.
