How Suite It Is -- Veritas Ships Updated Backup Bundle

Veritas Software, which last month wowed the investment world by announcing it is being acquired by Symantec in what may turn out to be the largest software deal in history, is shipping the latest version of its flagship backup and restore product.

Backup Exec 10.0 for Windows Servers adds a new advanced disk-based backup option that the company claims to back up and restore data much faster than competitors’ products. That capability is enabled by two additions.

Backup Exec 10.0 melds together multiple incremental backup images to create a single “synthetic” backup. Also, an “off-host backup” feature sharply decreases the impact of performing backups in a storage area backup environment by shifting snapshot backups to alternate storage.

Backup Exec 10.0 features a high performance remote agent that supports Red Hat and SUSE Linux as well as Sun Solaris servers.

In addition, Veritas has enhanced and renamed two other key products and bundled them into a suite with Backup Exec 10.0. Veritas Storage Replicator has been renamed Replicator Exec 3.1 while Veritas StorageCentral has been renamed Storage Exec 5.3.

Veritas Backup Exec 10.0 starts at $895. Replication Exec starts at $1,495 and Storage Exec starts at $795. The Veritas Backup Exec Suite, which includes all three products and a year of technical support, starts at $4,280.
