CodeGear Unveils IDE for Rapid Web Development

CodeGear is releasing a rapid application development (RAD) environment for database-driven Web-based applications that supports multiple versions of Microsoft Windows as well as the .NET Framework. The company's new RAD Studio 2007integrated development environment (IDE) supports Windows 2000, XP and Vista operating systems.

RAD Studio 2007, formerly code-named "Highlander," is designed for developers creating "high-performance Windows applications with rich GUI requirements," according to Nick Hodges, CodeGear's Delphi Product Manager.

The IDE works across Microsoft technologies by combining the functionality of a number of Codegear's products into a single platform, including Delphi for Win32, C++Builder and Delphi .NET 2.0.

RAD Studio 2007 supports the Microsoft Vista Aero user interface. It lets developers create three-dimensional user interfaces and animations and glassing effects using CodeGear's Visual Component Library (VCL) and VCL.NET.

The product allows developers to use ASP.NET 2.0 Framework to build Web applications and Web services. Database management is facilitated through the use of CodeGear's Blackfish SQL database engine and server.

Users can build objects and automatically create an ADO.NET database infrastructure using CodeGear's Enterprise Core Objects IV modeling capability, which is part of the product.

CodeGear has also improved its dbExpress 4 architecture, adding support for ADO.NET 2.0. The dbExpress 4 database facilitates desktop and client-server application development.

CodeGear, a division of Borland Software Corp., offers a Professional edition, Enterprise edition and Architect edition of RAD Studio 2007, with lower prices for those who are upgrading from other Borland products. The products will be available sometime this month and can be found here.
