Microsoft Purchases Movere To Support Azure Migrations

Microsoft on Wednesday announced that it was buying Movere, a partner that helps companies transition toward using cloud services.

Bellevue, Wash.-based Movere, formerly known as Unified Logic, is an 11-year-old consulting company that developed an agentless discovery service for optimizing cloud moves. Its platform supports both Amazon Web Services and Microsoft Azure cloud platforms.

Microsoft intends to add Movere's technologies to its own Azure Migrate service, according to Jeremy Winter, partner director for Azure management, in Microsoft's announcement:

Movere's innovative discovery and assessment capabilities will complement Azure Migrate and our integrated partner solutions, making migration an easier process for our customers. We believe that successful cloud migrations enable business transformation, and this acquisition underscores our investments to make that happen.

The Azure Migrate service reached "general availability" commercial release status in March of last year, although it was limited back then to assessing VMware workloads.

Movere got into the cloud migration business after making its own cloud migration mistakes.

"Our platform became a vehicle not only for sharing our best practices but also providing tools to get businesses started on their own path," explained Kristin Ireland, Movere's CEO, in a Movere announcement.

Movere's service, which can scan at a rate of "1,000 servers per hour," pulls data from Windows or Linux computing environments. Organizations get a dashboard representation of their computing environment, which is then used to improve efficiency and security or plan a cloud migration.The service can be used to assess total cost of ownership scenarios when moving to the cloud, as well as planning and sizing cloud moves. The service checks for virtual machine and storage options. It'll show regional subnet use, as well as the Azure Site Recovery service availability. It also performs application dependency mapping. These sorts of details were described by Andy Slivinschi, Movere's chief technical officer, in this 2017 Movere blog post.

No details were provided about the deal's terms and structuring, or on how Movere's customers might be affected. Ireland said that Movere would "continue to be faster and better for you as part of the Microsoft Azure team."
