HP Improves Windows Interoperability with CIFS/9000 for HP-UX

Hewlett-Packard Co. is moving to improve the interoperability between its HP-UX flavor of Unix and Windows with a new Common Internet File System for HP-UX 11 called CIFS/9000.
According to HP (www.hp.com), the new system is Windows 2000 Ready and will be available via Web download in February when Microsoft releases Windows 2000. A CD version of CIFS/9000 is scheduled to be available in March.
CIFS/9000 complements the CIFS Microsoft Corp. (www.microsoft.com) has provided as a standard for remote file access since Windows 95.
The CIFS/9000 client and server software, which also runs on TCP/IP networking protocols, means both Windows and HP-UX 11 platforms can be used interchangeably as file servers for each other for the first time, HP says.
HP also designed CIFS/9000 to allow single-user ID and password for client authentication into both HP-UX and Windows environments. The combination of features will allow companies with mixed HP-UX/Windows environments to simplify user account management and decommission extra distributed file systems, HP says.
