Data General Rolls Out Rack Server Consolidation Solutions

Data General Corp. will release the Aviion AV 1400 high-density 2U server, and the DG/RackManager rack management appliance. Additionally, Data General will offer the packaged "Proof-of-Concept" solution that includes support and consulting services to place a fully functional Windows 2000 infrastructure in a customer's business.

The Aviion AV 1400 is a high-density server optimized for rackmount configurations, allowing up to 19 servers to be configured in a cabinet. It runs on dual 700 MHz Pentium III processors, each with 256 KB of integrated Level 2 cache, supporting up to 2 GB of ECC-protected SDRAM memory. The server comes standard with redundant hot-swappable cooling systems, a hot-swappable power source, three PCI slots, and dual integrated SCSI LAN and video, in a 2U chassis. Internal storage capabilities include bays for four internal hot-swappable drives, an internal DAT drive, a CD-ROM, and a 3.5-inch floppy with external storage. The AV 1400 is also packaged as part of Data General's TermServer-in-a-Box solution.

The DG/RackManager is a rack management appliance for rack mounted servers. The appliance consolidates the emergency management port (EMP) connections for all the managed servers to enable functions such as centralized fault management and alerting, integration of management tools for rack components, and remote power-on and power-off. It will offer control either through the included rackmount console or remotely over an integrated Ethernet LAN.

Windows 2000 Proof-of-Concept is a consulting service which will help customers model and evaluate proposed Windows 2000 solutions prior to large-scale deployments.

The AV 1400 will be available this quarter starting at $5,200. DG/RackManager will be available in the second quarter.
