Microsoft Corp. will give customers a preview of the new Window CE version of SQL Server on June 30.
The Windows CE edition represents the scaling down part of Microsoft’s work to extend its flagship relational database management system with the next version, SQL Server 2000. The version is also expected to scale up to 64-bit systems and to scale out through the use of clustering technology called database partition views.
Microsoft (www.microsoft.com) positions the handheld edition of SQL Server as an important part of its Windows DNA architecture for providing mobile access to corporate data and applications.
The June beta of SQL Server 2000 Windows CE Edition should roughly coincide with the general release of SQL Server 2000.
The Windows CE has a footprint of less than 1 MB. It contains a data engine with support for 128-bit encryption; a connectivity module that allows it to access data from a remote SQL Server 6.5, SQL Server 7.0, or SQL Server 2000 database; and a bi-directional replication component. --Scott Bekker
