Pop Quiz: Windows Server 2012 R2 Guest Clusters

Applies to the "Configure and manage high availability" objective of Exam 70-412.

Q: A company's administrator needs to configure a guest cluster to use shared VHDs.

Which of the following can be setup as shared VHDs for guest clusters? (Choose all that apply.)

  1. Data disks
  2. Disk witness
  3. Operating system virtual disk
  4. Host machine

Answer is A and B. Virtual hard disk files (in the .vhdx file format) can be shared between multiple virtual machines. These .vhdx files can be used as shared storage for a virtual machine failover cluster, also known as a guest cluster.

Quick Tip: Shared .vhdx storage provides a layer of abstraction that does not expose underlying storage arrays to users of the virtual machines.

Bonus Question: What feature in Windows Server 2012 supports applying data governance across file servers to control who can access information and to audit who has accessed information? (The answer, of course, will be revealed next time!)

Answer to bonus question from last week: SMB version 3 (found in Windows Server 2012) is needed to support cluster replicated VMs.
