Cisco Acquires Fibex and Amteva

Cisco Systems Inc. today announced it has completed the acquisitions of Petaluma, Calif.-based Fibex Systems (www.fibex.com) and Amteva Technologies Inc. (www.amteva.com) of Glen Allen, Virginia.

In early April, Cisco announced plans to acquire Fibex, a manufacturer of Integrated Access Digital Loop Carrier (IADLC) products and devices that combine traditional voice services with data services using ATM as the underlying architecture. Fibex Systems' technology will allow Cisco to transition voice and data traffic to cell and packet networks, while enabling customers to maintain their traditional phone business using existing circuit switch infrastructure.

Later that same month, Cisco announced an agreement to acquire privately-held Amteva Technologies, a developer of middleware, which provides a unified means for enabling voicemail, fax and e-mail messages over an IP-based network. By incorporating Amteva's middleware solution as part of the Unified Communications initiative for both enterprise and service providers, Cisco aims to make it easier for third party developers and system integrators to add value to the open voice solution. -- Thomas Sullivan
