Nortel, Telia Announce Strategic Multi-Network Partnership

Nortel Networks Corp. (www.nortelnetworks.com) and Telia Mobile (www.telia.com), a Swedish wireless provider, announced a cooperative effort to develop advanced IP technology spanning multiple networks, including both traditional wireless and wireline networks. The proposed system also includes capability for cable and satellite network systems.

The focus of the Nortel/Telia partnership is the ability to provide subscriber-managed network services across a range of multiple, dissimilar networks. For example, number portability could be implemented and further leveraged to deliver subscriber-managed services that would dynamically reroute connections based on criteria provided by subscribers through Web-based or Wireless Application Protocol (WAP) interfaces. Other applications could include call filtering, automatic call diversion, and customizable access.

The new multi-network system would center on Nortel Networks’ SS7-IP Signaling Gateway – the Universal Signaling Point (USP) – as well as an emerging Internet standard, the Session Initiation Protocol (SIP). These protocols would make the network concept developed by Telia – that of enabling multi-media services to unify networks – a reality by providing a bridge in the Telia network for secure delivery of services that currently span dissimilar networks.

The USP is built on Nortel’s Signaling Server Platform, a signaling engine that provides scalable and flexible next generation networking solutions. By implementing the IPS7 "open architecture", which defines telephony signaling in packet networks, the USP provides a seamless interface between the classical SS7-based Intelligent Network architectures and new IP-based services. Additionally, the USP is designed to provide 99.999 percent system reliability and 100 percent system uptime.
