InstallShield, IBM Install Solutions to Simplify Software Installations

InstallShield Software Corp. released three new
Multi-Platform Edition products, InstallShield Express, InstallShield
Professional, and InstallShield Enterprise. The product line is the result of a
year-long co-development relationship with IBM Corp.
The Multi-Platform products, formerly known as InstallShield
Java Edition, provide developers with the capability to create one application
installation that meets the needs of multiple platforms, including Solaris,
Linux, AIX, OS/2, and Windows.
InstallShield worked with major platform vendors in order to
create “Platform Packs,” which build on the platform-specific capabilities in
each operating system to provide the most robust installations for each environment.
The Platform Packs combine Java classes and native code with several benefits.
Java applications launch without requiring users to run a separate batch file
to launch the Java virtual machine; native desktop icons are built;
applications uninstall correctly using the OS’ native control panel; file
associations are set up for each native environment; native installation
technologies can be incorporated into the installation setup; and software
objects are defined and managed so that multiple products can share components.
The software also features a graphical installation interface.
