Pwdump3, a free utility allowing network administrators to
retrieve password hash files from remote systems including Windows NT 4.0 and
2000 systems, is now available on e-business technology Inc.’s Web site.
Pwdump3 enhances the existing Pwdump and Pwdump2. The first
version allowed users with administrator privileges to extract password hashes
from remote NT systems, but not if syskey was enabled. The second version
worked whether or not syskey was enabled, but only on the local machine.
Pwdump3 works across the network and whether or not syskey is enabled. Combined
with L0phtCrack, administrators can use Pwdump3 to evaluate the strength of
passwords and whether individual users are following network policies.
A key enhancement of Pwdump3 is that it now allows
administrators to retrieve hashes from a remote NT system.
