Report: IIS Gains on SSL Sites “Consistent, Relentless”

Mirroring results in an upcoming ENT survey, a U.K. research
firm says that
Microsoft’s Internet
Information Server (IIS) is the most common Web server for SSL-enabled sites.
Figures from Netcraft show
that, as always, the open-source Apache Web server is most in use
Internet-wide, with 60 percent of sites relying on it. When statistics are
narrowed to SSL sites, however, “Microsoft makes consistent and relentless
gains, month after month, and now accounts for 49 percent of the sites performing
encrypted transactions on the Internet,” Netcraft reports.
The Netcraft study suggests that Microsoft’s Commerce
Server, in use at many e-commerce sites, and the lack of a Unix-based
alternative may account for much of IIS’s popularity.
Netcraft has a tool on its site that can ping a URL and
determine what Web server and operating system a site is using.
The trend of increasing adoption of IIS has continued for
some time now, as shown in two recent ENT surveys of the largest corporations
