EMC Corp. is expanding its storage focus with the
announcement on Monday that it formed a division to develop storage products
for delivering Web content.
EMC’s
new organization will focus on providing solutions for the growing rich media
content market, which includes non-text information such as video and audio. In
addition, it will also provide Internet solutions for the growing
infrastructure and service provider markets.
EMC has named veteran Lucent
Technologies executive Bill Nelson to lead this organization as Senior Vice
President, Content and Information Center Markets
For
EMC, the move signals a shift from its traditional focus of providing data
storage solutions. In doing so, the storage giant is looking to capitalize on
the growth of the media content market that is expected to occur over the next
couple of years.
The organization will bring
together several EMC initiatives, including EMC Internet Solutions, EMC Media
solutions, and the EMC Service Provider Industry Program.
Founded in 1997, the EMC
Internet solution division provides custom Internet application management and
hosting services. EMC Media solutions develops solutions geared toward media
players such as broadcasters, cable operators and cable operators.
The EMC Service Provider
Industry Program supports EMC's efforts to provide the world's leading
telecommunications companies and service providers with the most comprehensive
set of information storage, management and protection tools available. - Jim Martin
