Antivirus Vendor Releases Top Viruses of April List

The Magistr worm worked its way up to the top of antivirus vendor Sophos' April edition of its monthly list of the most frequently occurring viruses.

Magistr accounted for 27 percent of virus reports to the company last month. It switched places with the Win32 virus Apology-B, which is number four in April but was the most common virus in March.

"[Magistr] is particulary notable because it contains its own SMTP client and doesn't rely on using Outlook or other e-mail programs to spread," noted Graham Cluley, senior technology consultant at Sophos Anti-Virus. "However, it does rely on users to open it once it arrives so the message to users is simple – don't open unsolicited attachments."

The only new virus to the Sophos' top ten this month is the Win32 virus, Badtrans.
