Dell Recalls Laptop Batteries

There are worse things than a Blue Screen of Death. A Dell Computer Corp. customer's laptop battery started smoking and may have caught fire, causing some property damage but no injuries.

The incident prompted Dell to recall 284,000 batteries this week that were sold with Inspiron 5000 laptops between January 2000 and March 2001. The batteries were also sold separately during the period.

The problem is caused by the battery overcharging.

Dell recommends that Inspiron 5000 customers remove the battery from notebook computers and contact Dell to find out if the battery is part of the recall.

A Web site dedicated to the problem can be found at http://support.dell.com/i5000battery .
