IBM Refreshes DB2

IBM Corp. this week revealed the availability date for the next version of its flagship DB2 database.
Version 7.2 will ship on June 8, around the same time as Oracle Corp. is expected to make its Oracle9i database available. IBM’s previous version, DB2 7.1, shipped in June 2000.
Big Blue’s focus with this version is on integrating data sources.
IBM enhanced the integration capabilities of DB2 with two of its other biggest software/middleware products, the WebSphere Application Server and MQSeries.
DB2 7.2 also adds support for SOAP and UDDI to the XML support already built into the product.
IBM worked in ways for customers to access information stored in Informix, Sybase, Microsoft SQL Server and Oracle databases. The company is also emphasizing the obligatory migration program for companies to migrate from Sybase, Oracle or SQL Server to DB2.
The upgrade follows IBM’s recent acquisition of Informix Corp.’s database business. At the time of the acquisition, IBM made clear that DB2 would remain its flagship database technology. –
