Windows XP RC1 Out

Microsoft Corp. put out the first Release Candidate for Windows XP this week.
The milestone marks the first look at Microsoft's next-generation client operating system in its feature-complete form.
Windows XP is the version of the operating system that unifies the Windows 9.x/Me code base and the Windows NT/2000 code base. The unified kernel is supposed to provide a more stable environment for consumers.
The operating system will ship Oct. 25 in three flavors: Windows XP Home Edition, Windows XP Professional and 64-bit Windows XP Professional.
With this sixth version of the Windows NT kernel, Microsoft has separated the client and server launches. Server versions of the release, formerly known by the codename Whistler, will be called Windows .NET Server. They are expected to ship in early 2002.
Microsoft says the beta testing program for Windows XP has involved 500,000 testers so far.
