Dell Drives Down Price Point on Workgroup Servers

Dell Computer Corp. introduced a departmental or branch office server priced at less than $2,000 on Tuesday.

Dell positions the PowerEdge 500SC as starting at $699, although the company Web site showed that a medium or large business customer choosing the default configuration, including Windows 2000 Server and 256 MB of RAM, would pay $1,920.

"By offering a true server at this price, customers won't need to risk using a desktop computer for their server solutions," Randy Groves, vice president and general manager of Dell's Enterprise Systems Group, said in a statement.

The 500SC is a one-processor server available with either an 800 MHz Celeron or a 1 GHz Pentium III. The system ships with an embedded 10/100 NIC and five PCI slots.
