Market research firm Cahners In-Stat Group says that the September 11 terrorist attacks provided a definite boost to the security industry, and the firm projects booming firewall revenues through 2005.
"The increasing paranoia among businesses since September has compelled companies to take a more serious approach to securing the enterprise network," says Jaclynn Bumback, an analyst with In-Stat.
Several factors are contributing to make security enterprise networks more difficult. They include fragmenting enterprises, widespread business partner connectivity, and increasingly sophisticated hackers, Cahners In-Stat finds.
In response to some of those problems, Virtual Private Network (VPN) firewalls have become one of the fastest growing segments of the enterprise security market, the group says.
Cahners expects end-user revenues in the space to reach $2.9 billion by 2005. The analyst firm identifies the top vendors in the market as SonicWall, WatchGuard, NetScreen, Cisco and Nokia.
