Marathon Prep Unnecessary for Upgrade Exams

According to Microsoft, the 70-292 and 70-296 upgrade exams to be as long in duration as standard MCP exams.

MCSEs on Windows 2000 who plan to take the 70-292: Managing and Maintaining a Windows Server 2003 Environment for an MCSA Certified on Windows 2000 and 70-296: Managing and Maintaining a Windows Server 2003 Environment for an MCSE Certified on Windows 2000 exams can expect those exams to be similar in duration as standard MCP exams. This, according to Ken Rosen, a product manager with Microsoft's Training and Certification Group, who has been answering forum member posts on the MCPmag.com IT/Certification Discussion Forums.

"[The] 70-292 and 70-296 [exams] will not be four-hour marathons like 70-240," said Rosen. "They'll be as long as (in fact, potentially shorter than) standard MCP exams. And if you don't pass on the first attempt, you'll be able to take it again (per our standard retake policies)," he added.

Anyone who passed the three NT 4.0 exams--70-067 NT Server 4.0, 70-068 NT Server 4.0 in the Enterprise and 70-073 NT Workstation 4.0--was eligible to take the upgrade 70-240 Accelerated exam. The 70-240 was a four-hour exam encompassing objectives on the 70-210 Win2K Pro, 70-215 Win2K Server, 70-216 Win2K Networking and 70-217 Active Directory exams. It was discontinued on Dec. 31, 2001.

MCSEs on Windows 2000 who want to upgrade to the MCSE on Windows Server 2003 title can take two upgrade exams, 70-292 and 70-296, instead of passing the seven exams required for the Windows Server 2003 track.
