Another Technical Preview Available for SQL Server 2005

Microsoft released its second SQL Server 2005 Community Technology Preview on Friday, giving customers another taste of the long-awaited "Yukon" version of SQL Server now planned for a mid-2005 release.

A CTP is an interim build of the code. This release follows a previous CTP release of SQL Server 2005 on Oct. 15. Microsoft's most recent public timetable called for the Beta 3 version of the database to come in the first quarter of 2005 with a Release to Manufacturing date in the summer.

The new CTP adds quality and performance enhancements and extends the 64-bit support that was already in the database engine to SQL Server 2005 Analysis Services and SQL Server 2005 Integration Services. The CTP is available to MSDN and Betaplace subscribers.

Along with the CTP, Microsoft distributed a technical preview of a new, free database management tool called the SQL Server 2005 Express Manager. The ease-of-management and support tool is aimed at low-end and older versions of the database.

It will support SQL Server 2005 Developer and Express editions, SQL Server 2000 and SQL Server 2000 Desktop Engine (MSDE 2000) on local and remote computers.
